Two Signals the Trend Is Over – And How to Spot Them

I suppose every more experienced trader has come across phrases like “The trend is your friend” and similar. This is one of the oldest sayings among traders and can be considered wise. A trend, in essence, is a strong movement in one direction, and many traders believe that there is potential to profit by trading with the trend.

However, to make a profit from the trend, it’s not enough to only know the entry points—you also need to anticipate when the trend might end. Knowing the potential endpoint of a trend allows you to maximize profit from every open position and identify trend reversal points from which you can enter a new direction.

Signs of Trend Reversal

The first signal that a trend might be coming to an end is a break of the trendline. When the price breaks through the current trendline, don’t rush to conclusions or reverse your position immediately. To be sure the trend has truly ended, wait for a second breakout. Two breaks of the trendline are a strong indication that the trend is nearing its end.

The second signal of the end of a trend is the breakout of the last local high (in a downtrend) or local low (in an uptrend). In other words, the second breakout should be above the base point of the previous wave (for a bullish market) or below it (for a bearish market). In this case, we are working based on the very definition of a trend. As we know, a trend is a market movement characterized by a consistent increase in local highs and lows in an uptrend, or their decline in a downtrend.

Therefore, when we notice a shift in this structure, it is a signal of a potential trend reversal.

To identify this moment, it is necessary to break the trend into waves or distinguish between impulsive and corrective price movements. When the price breaks through the beginning of the last impulse move, this may be a sign that the trend has ended.
