China said just minutes ago that the total number of coronavirus cases in mainland China had risen to 830 and the death toll had increased to 25. This comes as fast-spreading infections prompted local authorities to quarantine several major cities and cities. to cancel the events of the lunar New Year in Beijing and elsewhere.
The virus – which was first diagnosed less than a month ago – has also infected about a dozen people around the world, including confirmed in Singapore and Saudi Arabia, according to numerous reports from international and local media. Medical teams are shipped nationwide, and hospitals are asking for donations of essentials, including face masks, eye protectors, protective uniforms and disinfectants.
Local authorities in China have quarantined Wuhan and Huanggang, which have a total population of 17 million. Including Wuhan, where the virus was first identified, travel bans on at least seven cities were in force Thursday.
China offers domestic flights and train ticket reimbursements nationwide. Approximately 246,000 passengers arrived in Wuhan either by plane or train on Thursday before all transportation in and out of the city was halted. The number of people leaving the city is currently unknown.
