U.S stocks opened higher, with the Dow industrials shooting above the 18,000 for the first time ever on Tuesday, as a surprisingly big upward revision to the third-quarter economic growth rate pushed prices higher. The economy grew at a 5% annual pace in the third quarter, thanks largely to increased consumer spending and business investment. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.21% also set a fresh intraday record, after opening 6 points, or 0.3% higher at 2,085. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.33% added 60 points, or 0.3%, to 18,016 at the open. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.08% began the day up 11 points, or 0.2%, at 4,792.
