Suspense in Turkey, the Russian ambassador was shot in Ankara

Russia’s ambassador to Turkey, Andrey Karlov, was shot while attending an art exhibit in Ankara on Monday, according to local media. Karlov was taken to a nearby hospital in a critical condition, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

Turkey and Russia have had a tumultuous relationship in recent years as they backed opposite sides in the Syrian civil war, with Turkey pushing for the overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, while Russia was his main patron.
A reporter for Turkey’s state-run TRT television said that the attacker shouted: “We’re dying in Syria and you’ll die here” as he shot the ambassador.
