Russia’s ambassador to Turkey, Andrey Karlov, was shot while attending an art exhibit in Ankara on Monday, according to local media. Karlov was taken to a nearby hospital in a critical condition, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported.
Turkey and Russia have had a tumultuous relationship in recent years as they backed opposite sides in the Syrian civil war, with Turkey pushing for the overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, while Russia was his main patron.
A reporter for Turkey’s state-run TRT television said that the attacker shouted: “We’re dying in Syria and you’ll die here” as he shot the ambassador.
