US markets are off to a positive start, led by strong reports from Microsoft and Meta. S&P 500 futures are up 0.9% and Nasdaq 100 is up 1.26%. Microsoft and Meta shares are up about 8% and 11%, respectively, in over-the-counter trading after better-than-expected earnings and guidance.
Investors are also watching the latest macro data – the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) index rose to 2.6% on an annual basis, against an expected 2.5%, which increases inflation concerns. At the same time, weekly claims for unemployment benefits were 218 thousand – below forecasts, signaling a stable labor market.
The Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged, but the lack of a clear commitment to September’s direction and internal disagreement among members are increasing caution in markets. However, strong corporate earnings are maintaining the positive momentum.
