The Canadian government has activated a temporary program for exemption from these tariffs for strategic imports – medical equipment, energy, food, industrial components – with the aim of minimizing the impact on production and the public sector (6-month relief). Canada’s response to the U.S. tariffs is clear and multifaceted — a combination of protectionism, financial support, temporary relief measures, and social messaging to encourage consumption of Canadian goods is being used.At the same time, there is significant risk, especially if negotiations fail by August 1.
Although the strategy is currently well-considered and targeted, much depends on diplomatic flexibility and the ability to avoid or mitigate a deal involving tariffs above 35%.
