Trump vs. the Fed: Will Powell Fall?

President Donald Trump is seriously considering removing Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell before the end of his term, with discussions on the matter reportedly ongoing for several months. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, conversations about Powell’s potential dismissal have taken place at Trump’s private Florida club, Mar-a-Lago, including with Kevin Warsh — a former Fed governor — whom Trump could potentially appoint as Powell’s successor.

However, Warsh has advised Trump against firing Powell, urging that he be allowed to complete his term. Despite this, Trump continued to discuss the matter with close advisers as recently as March.

In a meeting in the Oval Office, Trump reportedly said he believes he has the authority to remove Powell and accused him of manipulating interest rates for political purposes.

If Trump does attempt to dismiss the Fed Chair, the move would likely escalate to the Supreme Court and could rattle financial markets. It would raise serious questions about the Fed’s independence and the future of U.S. monetary policy.
