Bitcoin Halving: What It Is and Why It’s Important for Crypto Investors

What is a Bitcoin halving?

The Bitcoin halving is an event that occurs approximately every four years and reduces the reward for miners for a block they have purchased by 50%. This limits the amount of Bitcoin that enters the market. If market conditions remain the same, this could lead to an increase in the price.

Block rewards are part of the blockchain’s automatic process of verifying transactions and creating new blocks (called mining). Miners, participants who compete to solve a cryptographic puzzle, receive new bitcoins if they are the first to solve it.

Their block is added to the blockchain, they receive the reward, and the network begins a new race. All miners validate the data in the newly added block while trying to solve the puzzle for their own new blocks, hoping for an ever-decreasing reward.

Is the Bitcoin halving a good thing?

There are several reasons why many believe that halvings are beneficial for the Bitcoin ecosystem and market value. For others, however, this may not be so positive.

Inflation
One of the main ideas behind the reward reduction is to address the problems associated with inflation. Inflation is the reduction in the amount of goods that a given amount of currency can buy at a given time. In the US, inflation is measured by the value of a “basket of goods”. There is an acceptable rate of inflation that is generally considered healthy for the economy – usually 2%. However, this is a target set by central banks rather than an achievable value.

The Bitcoin halving is intended to counteract the inflationary effects on Bitcoin itself by reducing the reward and preserving its scarcity. However, this inflation “protection” mechanism does not protect Bitcoin users from the inflationary effects of the fiat currencies into which Bitcoin must be converted in order to be used in the real economy.

Rising value and demand

The halving reduces the rate of new Bitcoin creation, which has historically led to an increase in price (due to lower supply and pent-up demand).
Impact on miners

Reducing block rewards may make mining less profitable for some miners, especially if the price of Bitcoin does not rise significantly.
Historical “bulls” after halving

Historically, halvings have coincided with long-term bull runs in the market.
If the hashrate continues to increase, the halving date could be pushed back a bit.

Demand
Since halvings reduce the number of new bitcoins being put into circulation, demand typically increases. This can be seen by looking at bitcoin prices after previous halving events – they have typically increased. Historically, increased demand has driven prices higher, which is a positive for investors and speculators.

Bitcoin is designed with a maximum supply of 21 million coins. Due to the halving mechanism, in which the reward for mining new blocks is halved approximately every four years, the last Bitcoin is expected to be mined around the year 2140.

After that point, no new Bitcoins will be created, and miners will rely entirely on transaction fees as a reward for maintaining the network.

When will the next Bitcoin halving be?

The next halving is expected in 2028, when the block reward will decreased to 1.5625 BTC. The initial block reward when Bitcoin was created was 50 bitcoins:

July 9, 2016, to 12.5 bitcoins.
May 11, 2020, to 6.25 bitcoins.
April 19, 2024, to 3.125 bitcoins.
Mid-2028, to 1.5625 bitcoins.
