Another sell-off of several megacorporations is driving the Nasdaq 100 toward its longest streak of weekly losses since May 2022, with stocks also being affected by weaker-than-expected forecasts from leading companies across various industries.

The stocks have been hit hard, with the technology index on track to record its fifth consecutive week of declines. The S&P 500 is down by about 1%. Wall Street is preparing for additional volatility as options worth around $4.5 trillion, related to stocks, indices, and exchange-traded funds, are expected to expire. The “death cross” technical pattern in Nvidia Corp. keeps traders on high alert for potential further declines. Forecasts from companies such as FedEx Corp., Nike Inc., Micron Technology Inc., and Lennar Corp. have disappointed investors.
Just a week after the leading U.S. stock market index plunged into a 10% correction, attempts to recover have failed to hold, punishing one of the most traditional investment strategies: buying the dips. While the almost unanimous opinion is that tech giants remain the best-quality companies in the world, the question is whether these advantages have already been priced into the stocks and whether they are now at risk if the economy slows down and the big bets on artificial intelligence fail to deliver the expected results. In a stock market shaken by trade disruptions and rising fears of an economic slowdown, individual traders poured more than $12 billion into U.S. stocks during the week ending March 19, according to data from JPMorgan Chase & Co. Market observers are closely watching retail investors, as they are often the last to reduce their exposure to stocks, so the recent sharp increase in purchases by individual investors could mean that the market has not yet hit bottom. Investors are overlooking the risks of a full-scale trade war, as “monster” capital flows continue to pour into global equity markets, said Michael Hartnett from Bank of America Corp. The fact that capital inflows into stocks have reached a yearly high and that indices in Germany and China – two of the leading exporters to the U.S. – have risen following Donald Trump’s election suggests that investors are skeptical about whether U.S. tariffs will trigger a recession.
