How to read charts like a professional

Trading success often depends on our ability to identify potentially profitable assets before a sharp price movement. This is especially true in the cryptocurrency market, where high volatility is the norm. Technical analysis – analyzing historical price movements and chart patterns – is one of the main methods for predicting price direction. Candlestick analysis, which is part of technical analysis, allows traders to visualize potential price movements. Through these methods, specific patterns can be identified, suggesting future price changes.

Understanding Candlestick Charts
Candlestick charts help traders react quickly to market changes by providing clear visual signals. Unlike line charts, candlesticks offer more details within a specific time frame, which is extremely important in the dynamic world of cryptocurrencies. Some of the most common bullish (rising) patterns include:

● Hammer. A candle with a small body and long lower wick. It may signal a reversal to the upside when it appears after a downtrend.

● Bullish Engulfing. A two-candle pattern where the second bullish (green) candle fully engulfs the first bearish (red) candle. It often indicates potential upward movement when found at the bottom of a bearish trend.

● Double Bottom. A formation with two similar lows, suggests a reversal and possible price increase.

These patterns allow traders to predict potential price reversal points in time, build a proactive strategy, and confirm their trading decisions in a volatile cryptocurrency market.

In addition to bullish and bearish patterns, there are also so-called neutral candlestick formations, such as the doji. These often indicate market indecision, when the strength of buyers and sellers is approximately equal. Here are some typical doji candles:

● Classic Doji. The opening and closing prices of the candlestick are nearly identical. The candle resembles a thin horizontal line with short shadows above and below. If the closing price is slightly higher than the opening price, it forms a bullish doji, which may suggest potential price increase.

● Long-legged Doji. This pattern features long shadows upward and/or downward. It shows significant indecision and uncertainty in the market, often suggesting the possibility of a downward movement.

● Riksha Doji. This pattern is characterized by almost equal shadow lengths above and below, with the price located near the middle of the trading range.

Key Elements of Chart Analysis

To predict price direction and identify valuable trading opportunities, traders must also use other tools from chart analysis. Here are the most important ones to consider when analyzing candlestick patterns:

Support and Resistance Levels

● Support: A level where prices typically stop falling and start to rise due to increased buying interest.

● Resistance: A level where prices often stall or reverse downward due to selling pressure.

These levels are determined based on historical highs and lows. The more times the price reacts to a particular level, the stronger and more significant it becomes. It’s important to note that support can turn into resistance if the price moves below it—and vice versa.

Traders often trade on bounces from these levels or when the price breaks above/below them. For example, on a historical 4-hour BTC/USD chart, the price reaches the resistance level of $99,320, forms a bullish doji (as described above), and then follows with a decisive breakout upward.

Trend

  • Uptrend: Drawn through higher lows, indicating support in a rising market.
  • Downtrend: Drawn through lower highs, signaling resistance in a falling market.

Avoid trading against the trend to reduce risk. A trend reversal can be a strong signal for identifying key turning points in the market.

Guide to Reading Candlestick Patterns

Candlestick charts provide valuable insights into market sentiment, but proper interpretation is crucial. Here are some practical tips for traders:

  • Analyze the patterns in context.
In an uptrend, look for signals of a reversal downwards (e.g., bearish engulfing). In a downtrend, focus on bullish signals (e.g., hammer, bullish engulfing). In sideways movement (range), doji and long shadow candles often indicate indecision – in such situations, it’s better to wait for a clear signal.
  • Focus on key levels.
Patterns that form near important support or resistance levels (local highs/lows or historical levels) have a higher chance of being successful.
  • Analyze the size and shape of the candles.
Large candles with solid bodies indicate strong momentum. Small bodies with long wicks (doji) suggest uncertainty. A weakening of momentum and the appearance of smaller candles often precede reversal patterns such as hammer or engulfing.
  • Test on historical data.
Studying past price movements strengthens the understanding of patterns. For example, on the daily BTC/USD chart, the trend reversed upwards after a bullish engulfing pattern formed at the support level of $40,779. The price then reached resistance at $64,933, where a bearish engulfing pattern formed. This led to a sharp decline – first to $40,779, then to $35,387.

Relying solely on individual candlestick patterns is risky, as they do not provide the full picture – however, when analyzed in context, they can signal early indications of potentially promising assets. Trading decisions should always be confirmed with additional technical indicators. Combining candlestick analysis with technical tools can improve the accuracy of your predictions.

Conclusion

Chart analysis helps traders identify promising assets through the visual interpretation of price patterns. However, no single approach guarantees 100% accuracy. To reduce risk, it is important to use a comprehensive strategy: study candlestick formations in combination with key levels and trends, complement the analysis with technical indicators and volume data, and always consider the fundamental context.

Macroeconomic events, trading volume, liquidity, market sentiment – all these factors influence the price movements of cryptocurrencies. The more data you analyze, the greater the likelihood of making an informed decision and avoiding costly mistakes.
