The Japanese yen will continue to outperform its major competitors until macroeconomic trends and the policy outlook become clearer.

The yen has gained about 5% against the dollar this year, marking the best performance among the G10 currencies. The primary reason is the divergence between the Bank of Japan and other major central banks, as the BOJ is raising interest rates while others are easing conditions.

It’s true that the BOJ is starting from a very low base. But for anyone who has been trading markets for a while, the mere fact that its governor recently reiterated that Japan is facing inflation is a game-changer. The biggest trade that comes to mind is shorting Japanese government bonds on the basis of ever-increasing debt. Things are changing.
