The Forex market is the largest and most liquid financial market in the world with trillions of dollars in daily turnover. With its 24/7 operation, forex traders enjoy the flexibility of trading at any time. However, determining the optimal time is a common question, especially among beginners. The answer depends on several factors, such as market volatility, liquidity, and trading sessions.
Types of Trading Sessions

There are four main trading sessions based on the timing of market activity: Asian, European, American and Pacific. Each session has its own distinctive features.

Asian Session: The Asian trading session begins with the opening of the Tokyo market at (midnight GMT). This session is usually associated with low volatility as currency pairs often trade in a narrow range. However, economic data from Japan, China and Australia may lead to moments of increased volatility.

European session: The European trading session begins with the market opening in London (8am GMT). It is known for its high volatility, with often significant price movements of currency pairs. This session is marked by significant trading volumes and liquidity, providing ample trading opportunities.

American session: The American trading session begins with the opening of the New York market at (13:00 GMT). Like the European session, it is characterized by high volatility and large price swings. The American session is known for its significant trading volumes and liquidity, which makes it the most active and dynamic period for trading, especially the first hours, which are also the last for the European session.

Pacific session: It begins with the opening of the market in Sydney at (22:00 GMT). This session is typically low-volatility, with currency pairs often trading in a tight range.
Traders should consider their individual trading styles and preferences when choosing the most appropriate session for their trading activities.

Here are the main criteria to consider when determining the best time to trade forex:

Market Volatility: Higher volatility often provides more trading opportunities as it implies larger price movements.
Liquidity: High liquidity ensures smoother order execution and tighter spreads. Trading during high liquidity sessions is generally preferred as it reduces the risk of slippage and improves order execution.

Overlapping sessions: Overlapping sessions occur when multiple trading sessions are active at the same time. These periods are usually of increased trading volumes and volatility. The most significant overlaps are between the European and American sessions.

Day of the week

Monday: Many traders take a wait-and-see approach on Monday. This is because important news in Europe and the US is relatively rare at the beginning of the week. As a result, the market often corrects against the trend.

Tuesday to Thursday: Volatility tends to be highest during these days of the week. Traders actively participate in the market, resulting in increased price movements and trading opportunities. These days are generally considered favorable for trading as the market is more dynamic.

Friday: Towards the end of the week, some traders calculate their profits to avoid taking excessive risks. As a result, there may be moves against the main trend as positions are closed and prepared for the weekend. It is important to be cautious and consider potential reversals or opposite moves on Friday.

When analyzing Kendall patterns on a daily basis, it is common to observe longer shadows on Mondays and Fridays. These shadows represent price movements that occurred during those days. The movements from Tuesday to Thursday form the body of the weekly candle and are often more significant.

Time frame

As the time frame of your trade increases, the importance of choosing a specific time to trade decreases. Here is a breakdown of the importance of trading time based on different time frames:

Till H1 (Hourly Charts): When trading smaller time frames such as till H1, trading sessions, important news, holidays and weekends are crucial. These factors can significantly affect market behavior and volatility.

H4 (4-hour charts): On the H4 time frame, only two 4-hour candles are formed during one trading session. Although the importance of choosing specific trading hours during the day is decreasing, it is still essential to consider the timing of the release of important economic data.
D1 (daily charts) and higher: For traders using daily charts and larger time frames, the trading session schedule becomes less relevant. Instead, focus on key news release dates and holidays. Traders typically assess market conditions once a day and trade signals appear at the close of the daily candle.

It is important to note that these recommendations mainly apply to the foreign exchange market. When trading stocks and commodities, it is advisable to follow the exchanges where the largest volume of the relevant assets is traded.
Economic Calendar

In forex trading, it is usually sufficient for traders to consider the standard economic calendar. This calendar provides the dates of key macroeconomic statistics, and the filtering system can help identify news of higher importance.

One particularly important day to note is the first Friday of each month. That’s when the Nonfarm Payrolls report, which reveals the number of jobs created outside of the United States’ agricultural sector, is released. This report is widely regarded as one of the most important economic indicators in forex trading.

Best time to trade Forex : (for beginners)

Focus on high volume sessions: Trading during the European and American sessions is recommended as these sessions have higher trading volume and liquidity. Increased market activity can provide better trading opportunities and tighter spreads.

Be careful during the Asian session: The Asian session is usually characterized by lower volatility and liquidity. While some currency pairs linked to the economies of Australia and New Zealand may see more activity, beginners are advised to approach the Asian session with caution due to potential challenges in finding favorable trading conditions.

Trade major currency pairs: Major currency pairs such as EUR/USD, GBP/USD and USD/JPY tend to be more liquid and stable. These pairs offer greater accessibility and can provide a more conducive learning environment for beginners. Trading major currency pairs allows you to focus on well-established trends and reduce the impact of fake moves.
