Buffett’s Indicator for Stock Valuation Passed 200% – Above the Level that He Once Described as ‘Playing with Fire’

The indicator, known as the “Buffett Indicator” – once favored by Warren Buffett for measuring stock market valuations – has reached a historic peak, raising concerns that investors are once again testing the limits of market euphoria.

The metric compares the total value of all publicly traded U.S. companies (the Wilshire 5000 index) with the value of the Gross National Product (GNP). In an article for Fortune in 2001, Buffett called it “probably the best single measure of where valuations stand at any given moment.”

At the time he warned: “If the percentage ratio falls to 70–80%, buying stocks is likely to work very well for you. However, if the ratio approaches 200% – as it did in 1999 and part of 2000 – you are playing with fire.”

Today the indicator stands at 217% – far above the peaks of the Dot-com bubble and the surge during the pandemic in 2021, when it reached about 190%. This shows that U.S. stock valuations are growing significantly faster than the real economy.

The main driver of the rally are the mega-companies from the technology sector, which are investing billions in the development of artificial intelligence and receiving high market valuations for the promises of the new era. Similar signals come from other indicators as well – the price-to-sales ratio of the S&P 500 recently rose to 3.33 – a new record, surpassing both the peak of 2000 (2.27) and the post-Covid level of 2021 (3.21).

Nevertheless, some analysts believe that Buffett’s indicator no longer carries the same message. The U.S. economy has transformed drastically – less dependent on physical assets and increasingly oriented toward technology, software, and intellectual property. This raises the question of whether traditional measures such as GDP and GNP underestimate the real value of a data- and innovation-driven economy.

Buffett himself has not commented on the indicator for years. Instead, his conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway has been building a “cash fortress” – in the second quarter the company reported record cash reserves of $344.1 billion and, for the eleventh consecutive quarter, was a net seller of stocks.

Even if the indicator has lost part of its significance, the combination of its current extreme levels and the cautious stance of the “Oracle of Omaha” will certainly attract the attention of investors.
