The Historic Intraday Reversal in U.S. Stocks Signals a Deterioration in Market Sentiment

Risk sentiment flipped sharply on Thursday, with equities suffering one of the biggest intraday reversals since April. Concerns over AI-related capital expenditures, weakness in the South Korean economy, and hawkish comments from the Federal Reserve erased the positive impact of what were supposed to be strong results from Nvidia, Walmart, and the September labor market data.

The early 1.9% gain in the S&P 500 reversed into a 1.6% decline — a sharp and historic intraday move that clearly signaled a deterioration in sentiment. The index broke below its October low and closed slightly under its 100-day moving average. Selling pressure began with the usual suspects — weaker, unprofitable high-volatility and momentum-driven companies — and then spread as key technical levels were breached, triggering systematic selling and dealer hedging that further accelerated the decline.

The narrative around artificial intelligence is beginning to shift from headline-driven enthusiasm over increased spending to concerns about cash-flow sustainability — specifically, whether companies’ massive investments will be profitable enough to justify these costs. Nvidia beat expectations on revenue and EPS, but accounts receivable rose and chip inventories roughly doubled — a combination that keeps the debate alive over who will finance the next phase of the capex cycle, especially given that China has neither the interest nor the capacity to absorb the aging inventory.

This caution is already weighing on credit markets. Oracle has become a clear, liquid proxy for hedging “AI credit risk” — CDS activity has exploded, and the company’s stock remains an easy pressure valve for this trade. The pressure is intensifying amid weakening sentiment across the broader credit market, where leading private credit firms and BDC structures are facing increased scrutiny. Even the Fed joined in the warnings — Governor Cook pointed to private credit and overvalued assets as emerging vulnerabilities, an unusually explicit public signal that further dampens risk appetite into year-end.

The consumer outlook has not improved either. Walmart beat expectations, raised guidance slightly, and showed that holiday demand is present — but indicators suggest consumers are shifting toward cheaper products and convenience. This implies consumption that supports slower growth due to constrained purchasing power — supportive for discounters, but less favorable for the broader discretionary segment that drives the U.S. economy.

Adding to this is a strengthening headwind from the Fed’s shifting stance. The labor market is cooling, but central bankers are sounding increasingly hawkish. Thursday’s labor data only deepened the contradiction. Unemployment rose to 4.4%, continuing jobless claims hit new highs, total hours worked were flat, and manufacturing employment weakened — classic late-cycle signals.

This should make a December rate cut almost certain, but the FOMC minutes and recent Fed commentary show a stubborn desire among “many” to keep rates elevated. The strong jump in September payrolls may also support this shift. A wider range of potential policy outcomes means greater sensitivity to data and increased cross-asset volatility — especially with market positioning fragile enough to allow sudden reversals.

Finally, the liquidity backdrop complicates things further. Even though quantitative tightening is ending, reserves may already be low enough to trigger a damaging cash shortage. The stigma preventing use of the Standing Repo Facility weakens the Fed’s safety mechanisms against front-end stress. This is not a liquidity environment risk managers can afford to ignore — especially when combined with AI concerns, weaker labor data, a softening consumer, and an uncertain rate path.

Looking ahead, investors may choose not to add risk into year-end after equities failed to hold such a strong early-day rally on a day of key catalysts.
