Silver Breaks Out – What’s Next?

Over the past 18 months, the gold–silver ratio has become a real test for investors betting on precious metals. While gold broke records at the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025 and dominated the headlines, silver – the metal with a dual nature, both a monetary asset and an industrial commodity – lagged behind.

This week, charts show the trend is reversing.

With silver breaking the psychological $60 per ounce barrier and the gold–silver ratio narrowing to 70, we are entering the most dynamic phase of the precious metals cycle: the phase of returning to the mean.

For investors entering now, this return is usually turbulent. Historically, in strong bull markets, the ratio does not stop at 70 – it narrows toward 50:1 or even 40:1.

There are only two scenarios for this:

  • Gold falls while silver remains unchanged – unlikely given ongoing monetary expansion.
  • Silver accelerates sharply upward to catch up with gold.

Market participants are increasingly betting on the second scenario.

Triple leverage

Experienced investors do not rely solely on physical metal. The real asymmetric potential comes from combining three types of exposure:

  • The metal: Silver itself traditionally moves more aggressively than gold when the ratio narrows.
  • Miners: Mining stocks often react two to three times more strongly than the metal price due to operational leverage.
  • Structure: Using options instead of stocks amplifies the movement even further.

The miner problem (and solution)

The issue is that many smaller mining companies burn capital without creating value. Even in a strong metal market, an investor can lose if the company is poorly managed.

To filter the noise, we use our internal “7777” system, which evaluates companies across four key fundamental criteria:

  • Profit: Do they actually generate revenue?
  • Valuation: Are they reasonably priced relative to results?
  • Growth: Are earnings expanding?
  • Financial stability: Can they withstand volatility?

Of all U.S.-traded stocks with options (not just miners), only 11 companies pass the screen.

The trade idea

Among these 11 companies, one silver mining company stands out – an instrument seemingly perfectly positioned for the expected “slingshot” effect in silver’s movement.

We are currently finalizing an options structure to play this breakout, along with a separate, higher-risk speculative position in a European biotech company, where corporate jet activity hints at a possible upcoming buyout.
