Millennium Management’s Success Secret: A Quick Loss Limitation Strategy

The $69 billion hedge fund Millennium Management employs a simple yet effective trading strategy to ensure it almost always makes money in the stock market: to minimize losses from stocks as quickly as possible.

The firm, one of the largest hedge funds in the world, was founded in 1989 and has only lost money in a single year—2008, when the financial crisis escalated into a sharp recession and the S&P 500 plummeted by 38%.

However, the fund was able to significantly outperform the S&P 500 that year, reporting a small loss in the low single digits.

Except for that anomalous year, Millennium has achieved profits every year in its 35-year history, accumulating $56 billion in cumulative profits for its investors.

When the S&P 500 fell by 10% in 2000, when the dot-com bubble began to burst, Millennium had its best year yet, reporting a 35% return for its investors, according to Bloomberg data. And in 2022, when the S&P 500 ended the year down 19%, Millennium achieved a 12% increase.

The continuous streak of positive returns at Millennium stems from its multifaceted approach.

This means that 2,600 traders, investment analysts, and portfolio managers work independently in various groups, employing different investment strategies in stocks, bonds, options, and commodities.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, the game is simple: make money and stay employed, or lose money and you will likely be fired.

The report states that when a Millennium portfolio manager, who oversees $1 billion, loses $50 million, or 5%, the first threshold is reached, at which point the available trading capital for that manager is cut in half, to $500 million.

If that portfolio manager then loses an additional $25 million, or a total of 7.5% of the initial $1 billion invested, they are likely to be fired, the report adds, noting that exceptions are sometimes made.

This strict loss-limiting trading strategy means the hedge fund goes through many employees, with an annual turnover of about 15-20% of staff.

But the trading strategy is also what turned its founder, Israel Englander, into a billionaire.
