Speculative stocks in a coma: A sign of calm before the storm?

After Monday’s excitement, the market lulled investors to sleep on Tuesday.

The day was extremely dull with a slightly negative tone. Market breadth was weak — there were more new 12-month highs than lows, but the “Magnificent Seven” (MAGS) once again served as a safe haven, rising by 0.9%. Small-cap stocks struggled, with the Russell 2000 index losing 0.5%.

One of the most notable aspects of Tuesday’s trading was the near-total absence of speculative activity. Only about a dozen stocks gained more than 10%, and just one of them was priced above $10. I can’t remember the last time speculative stocks were this subdued.

The bullish take on this situation is that the market is simply consolidating gains after the big run-up, building a base for the next move higher. The bearish view is that it’s a sign of stagnation—and if the market doesn’t show stronger momentum soon, investors may grow uneasy and start selling again.

The main issue remains the uncertainty around tariffs—no one really knows what Trump will do. Some concerns were eased after he said he would be flexible, but fears of aggressive action still linger.

Additionally, weaker-than-expected consumer confidence data didn’t help the situation. Anxiety about inflation and the economy remains high, and every new economic report carries the risk of triggering a negative reaction. The market is extremely challenging right now, and the best approach may be to stay patient and closely monitor how things unfold.
