Stocks fell alongside the Canadian dollar Friday afternoon after President Donald Trump announced the immediate termination of all trade discussions with Canada in response to the country’s planned implementation of a digital services tax targeting American tech companies.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump called the move a “direct and blatant attack” and accused Canada of copying the European Union’s approach to taxing digital firms. Trump said the US would notify Canada of its tariff level within the next seven days.

The S&P 500 has retreated from a record high and is dipping into the red, while Canadian stocks, which also hit a record high on Friday — for the second time this week and the 16th time this year — are now down 0.6% on the day. Stocks are showing concern after President Donald Trump announced the end of U.S.-Canada trade talks in response to Canada’s planned digital services tax.
US energy companies and Canadian raw materials are leading the sell-off (the materials sector is far heavier in Canada, where it makes up 13% of the index, than in the US, where it is just 1.9%).
